First time in Indonesia: visa, flights, money and health for a Komodo trip

Updated 12 October 2026

Six tables cover a first visit to Indonesia for a Komodo trip: visa, flights, money, connectivity, health and port rules. Each shows the date it was checked. Fees and schedules change, so verify visa fees, flights and closures on the official sites before you travel, and send us the passport list with the balance.

Visa and entry

Entry rules follow the passport, so one grid cannot answer for a mixed group. The table sets out who can get a visa on arrival, how the online e-VoA works, how long you can stay, what the passport must show and which card to fill in before landing. Treat it as a map of the questions, not as immigration advice.

For an organiser the practical step is one extra column in the group spreadsheet: nationality, passport expiry and visa route, per guest. The passport must be valid for 6 months after arrival and carry 2 blank pages. Those two checks stop travellers at airline counters, so make them first.

Verify three things on the official immigration site before you book flights: the fee, your nationality's eligibility and the arrival card. The fee in the table is the one read on the date shown under it. An increase has been announced without an effective date, so check the figure again before you fly. The names on the passenger list that you send us must match each passport exactly.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
e-VoAThe same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days.
VoA / e-VoA priceIDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly.
Length of stay30 days from the day you arrive, single entry
ExtensionOnce, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end.
Visa-free entry30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
PassportValid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages
Onward ticketProof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA
All Indonesia arrival cardFree and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration.
Arriving in Labuan BajoMost visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight
Bali tourist levyIDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee.

Flights to Labuan Bajo

Guests reach Labuan Bajo by a domestic connection through Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya. The table gives the airport code, the hubs, flight times, the airlines seen on the routes and the short drive from the airport to the harbour.

We advise on routes and times and we sell no tickets. Land the day before sailing, so one cancelled or delayed flight cannot eat the first day of the trip. On the open trip the pickup window is 10:30 to 11:55 on day 1, which makes a same-day morning arrival a gamble for a group of any size.

On the way home, a 3D2N trip returns between 10:00 and 11:00 on day 3, so book a flight after 14:00. Two-day open-trip guests land between 19:00 and 20:30 on day 2 and should fly the following day. Airline schedules change, so check the timetable again a few weeks before you travel.

Money, cash and tips

Budget in rupiah. The table lists the banks with ATMs near the harbour, the limit per withdrawal and the card surcharge it records for hotels, boat charters and larger restaurants. Prices on this site carry an approximate dollar figure beside the rupiah amount, so check your bank's rate on the day you pay.

The national park and the islands have no ATMs, so cash for the days aboard is cash you collect in Labuan Bajo before the pickup. It covers tips and small purchases ashore. The fare covers meals, water, tea and coffee, and the park ticket is paid online, not in cash.

Tipping is excluded from every fare and is never compulsory. The table gives the range recorded for boat crew per guest per day. Decide in the group whether to pool it, and who hands it over at the end of the trip. Budget it as a line of its own.

CurrencyIndonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026
ATMsBCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board.
ATM limitsIDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges
Cards or cashCards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash.
TippingAppreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range.

Phones, Wi-Fi and plugs

Starlink Wi-Fi is fitted on the boat. The table covers the other half: SIM registration with a passport, the network with the best coverage around Labuan Bajo and how an eSIM is installed before the flight.

Signal on boats is patchy, so tell family at home that messages will arrive in batches. Send anything urgent, passport lists and payment slips included, before the boat leaves the harbour.

Mains power runs at 230 V and 50 Hz, on plug types C and F, the two round pins. The cabin sockets in our footage are the round two-pin type, with one to three outlets in a cabin, and a power strip helps a cabin of three. Tap water is not safe to drink in Indonesia. The boat serves free-flow mineral water, tea and coffee.

SIM cardsEvery SIM must be registered; visitors register with a passport
Best networkTelkomsel has the widest coverage in Labuan Bajo and offshore; signal is still patchy between the islands
eSIMInstall it before you fly and activate it on landing; a typical plan of 25 GB for 30 days costs about USD 15 to 22

Health and insurance

We are not a medical source, and the table below is public information read on the date printed under it. It lists insurance advice, the two hospitals in Labuan Bajo, what a pharmacy offers, emergency numbers and the diseases present in the region. A hyperbaric chamber is recorded for one of the two hospitals, and the source advises confirming its status with that hospital before anyone relies on it. This is a snorkel boat, with no tanks and no compressor aboard. Ask your own doctor or a travel clinic about vaccines and mosquito protection before you fly.

Travel insurance is not in any fare. A policy with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly advised, and a policy that covers trip cancellation is the only cover for the part of the booking that our cancellation schedule does not return.

Bring prescription medicines in their packaging, plus sunscreen and shoes with grip for Padar and Kelor. The boat carries a first-aid kit, life jackets and life rings. Give us each guest's diet and medical notes together with the head count. We print no halal, vegan or allergy guarantee.

InsuranceTravel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive

Port rules and the boarding pass

Two authorities decide whether a boat sails and where it goes. The harbour master's office issues each boat's sailing permit, and the park office controls access to the park. The table names them and lists the rules that follow. Passengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list.

That is why the passport list comes to us with the balance, as the booking steps set out. A late name change is not a small favour, because the group is registered under those names and a mismatch becomes a problem at the pier. On boarding day each guest carries one soft bag, with a passport or ID to hand.

The harbour master can suspend sailings at a day's notice, and the table lists recent closures. If an order stops this boat, the booking terms give you a replacement phinisi of equal or higher class on your dates, or all your money back within 14 days. The list is a record, and it forecasts nothing.

Who decidesThe harbour master's office (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues each boat's sailing permit; the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) controls access to the park
Boarding passPassengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list; your boat company registers you
Safety on boardThe harbour master's guideline requires life jackets and liferafts sufficient for everyone on board, no more passengers than the boat's capacity, and a weather check before each sailing permit
Recent closures1 to 8 February 2025: Komodo and Padar closed, Rinca only. 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026: staged closures, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. 6 to 8 August 2026: Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, Rinca open.

FAQ

Do I need a visa to join a Komodo trip?

It depends on the passport. For nationals of 97 listed countries the choice is a visa on arrival or the online e-VoA, each giving 30 days. Citizens of ASEAN countries enter without a visa for 30 days. Check your own passport on the official immigration site before you book flights, because fees and lists change.

Is the arrival card compulsory?

Yes. The All Indonesia arrival card is free and compulsory, filled in online within 72 hours before arrival. It covers immigration, customs and the health declaration, and every guest in the group needs one, children included. Collect the confirmations in the group chat so that the organiser can see who has finished.

Where do we clear immigration if we fly to Labuan Bajo?

At the first airport where you land in Indonesia. On the connections through Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya that is the connecting airport, followed by a domestic flight. Keep the onward ticket to hand, because a visa on arrival needs proof of onward travel, and check the exact wording with your airline.

Which plug do the cabin sockets take?

Round two-pin sockets, one to three per cabin. Mains electricity is 230 V at 50 Hz with plug types C and F, so bring an adapter if your chargers use another plug. A cabin of three guests shares those outlets, which is why a power strip is worth packing.

Can I drink the tap water?

No. Tap water is not safe to drink in Indonesia, so use sealed or filtered water only. Free-flow mineral water, tea and coffee are included on board, on the open trip and on a charter, so nobody needs to buy water for the boat.
